Many people are surprised to learn that Big Ben is really dealing with the biggest bell inside the tower rather than the tower or the watch.

The story of Big Ben began in 1834 when a fire destroyed the old Westminster palace. A new parliament building was built, and a clock tower was built. Construction of the new building began in 1840, but the clock had not been completed for decades. One reason for this was that the royal astronomer demanded that the clock be calculated even a second, which at that time seemed impossible. The design of the clock was completed in 1851, and the clock was completed in 1854, but the tower was not ready before 1859.
